The conditions created for people with disabilities at the University “Isa Boletini” in Mitrovica (UIBM), aim to serve as an example of good practice not only in Kosovo but also beyond. As a result, a Cooperation Agreement was signed between UIBM and the NGO “Little People of Kosovo – Mitrovica”, to promote and affirm the new Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, with the concept of creating an inclusive society for persons with disabilities in all areas of work and life.

Rector of UIBM, prof. dr. Alush Musaj, said that extraordinary working conditions have been created in the new university campus, including people with disabilities. In this context, he mentioned the facilitation of the access of these persons to all university facilities, but also the proper treatment of them.

While, Hiljmnijeta Apuk, president of the NGO “Little People of Kosovo – Mitrovica”, praised the commitment of the leaders of UIBM in terms of creating conditions and access for people with disabilities. “Special attention is needed for students with disabilities to develop and build a structure for their easier inclusion in higher education at UIBM, which will be an example of good practice for other universities in the Republic of Kosovo , the countries of the Balkan region and other countries of the world ”.

Under the agreement, the parties have agreed that joint activities in the field of inclusive inclusion of students with disabilities in education should be carried out by applying international standards and good practices and their participation in society on an equal basis with others. The agreement presents a general framework of cooperation and enables the development of special cooperation programs of common interest.

Otherwise, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, introduces a new model where persons with disabilities are subject to all rights that belong to them on an equal basis with others and repeals the old model in which persons with disabilities were subject to charity, medical treatment and social protection. For this purpose, UIBM and “NGO-Little People of Kosovo – Mitrovica”, have decided to cooperate, to create conditions for the participation of persons with disabilities in society on an equal basis with others.

This cooperation is expected to improve the conditions in higher education for full access for students with disabilities, to develop an authentic culture of people with disabilities to show the world what it is like to live with disabilities, to show the need, to respect diversity for people with disabilities as well as to promote and raise public awareness of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
